Sri Lanka is small enough to cross in a day, but its landscape changes dramatically across short distances. The central highlands — where the country's most iconic waterfalls, hiking trails, and viewpoints are concentrated — rise sharply from all directions within a few hours of Colombo. Choosing a base by region is often the most practical way to plan a trip, minimising driving time and grouping nearby attractions together.
The Ella region in Uva Province is the most popular base for highland travel, offering easy access to waterfalls, hiking trails, and scenic train journeys within a short radius. The Knuckles and Matale regions north of Kandy offer more remote highland terrain.
