Kotmale Reservoir Observation Point

The Kotmale Reservoir Observation Point sits above the Kotmale Dam on the Kotmale Oya river in the Nuwara Eliya District, part of the Mahaweli Development Programme that transformed Sri Lanka's highland hydrology in the 1980s.

From the observation point, the full scale of the dam wall becomes visible, stretching across the valley with the turquoise reservoir backed by densely forested mountain slopes. A circular overflow spillway is visible at the base of the dam, and a white Buddhist stupa perched on the hillside above the structure adds a striking focal point to the scene.

The reservoir itself is part of the Upper Kotmale Hydroelectric Project, one of the largest power generation schemes in Sri Lanka. The highland setting gives the water its distinctive teal-green colour, particularly striking in clear weather.

The observation point is accessible directly from the road and requires no hiking. It offers a quick but genuinely impressive stop on any journey between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, or as a detour on the route toward Gampola or Nawalapitiya.

The combination of engineering scale, highland scenery, and the hilltop stupa makes this a memorable roadside viewpoint that rewards even a brief visit.
