Day 1 - Sigiriya Rock and Dambulla Cave Temple
Climb Sigiriya Rock in the morning, then return for food and rest. Continue to Dambulla Cave Temple later in the day only when your energy, the weather, and available daylight are suitable.
Getting around
Use the private vehicle you are travelling with for the journey between Sigiriya and Dambulla.
Practical route notes
- Visit Sigiriya Rock first because most visitors prefer to complete the climb in the morning.
- Allow your own pace and the conditions at Sigiriya to determine how long you rest afterwards.
- Dambulla Cave Temple is practical later in the day, but it involves additional walking and steps.
- If you are too tired after Sigiriya, move the Dambulla visit to the following morning instead of rushing it.
- Follow the clothing, footwear, entrance, and religious-site guidance on the destination cards.
Day 2 - Flexible Morning and Wildlife Safari
Keep the morning flexible for rest or visit Dambulla Cave Temple if it was skipped on Day 1. Arrange a morning or afternoon safari through your hotel or a responsible local operator, with afternoon commonly preferred for an elephant-focused visit.
Getting around
Hotels, particularly around Habarana, can help arrange a safari jeep. Confirm the park, pickup details, and current conditions with the operator before departure.

- Morning and afternoon safari departures are possible; choose according to current wildlife advice and your wider travel plan.
- Ask where elephants have been observed recently before confirming Minneriya, because herds can move between Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Hurulu Eco Park.
- During dry-season gathering conditions, elephants are attracted to exposed grass and water around the reservoir, but their location and behaviour vary.
- Treat every safari as a wildlife experience and never as a guarantee of seeing elephants or any other animal.
