What to Pack for Hiking in Sri Lanka

A practical packing list covering footwear, clothing, gear, and supplies for day hikes to trails like Adam's Peak, Ella Rock, and the Knuckles range.

Footwear

Trail shoes or low-cut hiking boots are the ideal choice for the majority of Sri Lanka's highland hikes. Sandals are unsuitable for any trail with loose rock, roots, or steep steps — which includes Adam's Peak, Ella Rock, and almost all Knuckles routes. Grip is critical: highland trails become slick with mud during and after rain regardless of the season. Waterproof footwear adds comfort on forest trails that cross streams or see morning dew but is not essential for day hikes.

Clothing

Mornings at altitude (1,800 m+) are cold — temperatures at the Horton Plains plateau and Adam's Peak summit drop to 8-12°C before sunrise. A light fleece or windproof jacket is essential for early morning starts. Lower down, lightweight breathable fabrics are best; Sri Lanka's humidity means cotton shirts feel damp within an hour of exertion. For cultural sites en route, carry a light sarong or long trousers — bare legs are not permitted at most temples and cultural sites.

Water and Food

Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person for any hike over 3 hours. Many highland trails have no reliable water sources beyond the trailhead. During Adam's Peak pilgrimage season small tea shops operate at intervals — outside season there is nothing. Most Sri Lankan guesthouses will prepare a packed lunch if requested the evening before. Trail snacks like biscuits, bananas, and nuts are widely available at town shops near trailheads.

Navigation and Communication

Download your route on Google Maps or Maps.me before leaving mobile coverage — highland trail areas have patchy signal in places. A physical compass is useful in the Knuckles where trails are less defined. Share your route plan and expected return time with your guesthouse. On popular trails like Ella Rock, basic waymarking exists but can be difficult to follow in mist. If visiting Horton Plains, stick to the marked circular trail.

Other Essentials

Sun protection (SPF 30+, hat, sunglasses) is important even on cloudy days at altitude. A basic first aid kit with blister plasters and antiseptic is worth carrying for multi-hour hikes. Leech socks are useful for forest trails after rain — especially in the Knuckles and Sinharaja regions. Carry small-denomination cash; trailhead parking attendants, entrance fees, and village snack sellers rarely accept cards.
