Ella Rock

Ella Rock is one of the most rewarding hikes in Sri Lanka, located just outside the town of Ella in the central highlands. The trail leads to a dramatic viewpoint overlooking the famous Ella Gap, with sweeping views across tea plantations, valleys, and distant mountain ranges.

The hike typically begins near Kithalella Railway Station, reached either by walking along the railway tracks from Ella or by tuk-tuk. From the trailhead, the route crosses a small bridge before entering tea plantations, where the path gradually climbs through open landscapes.

Further along, the trail becomes steeper as it enters forest sections with exposed tree roots and rocky terrain. Navigation can be confusing in certain areas due to multiple intersecting paths, but the route remains manageable with basic awareness or offline maps.

At the summit, hikers are rewarded with one of the most iconic viewpoints in Sri Lanka. A secondary viewpoint located about 10–15 minutes away offers equally impressive photo opportunities in a quieter setting.

The hike is best started early in the morning, especially for sunrise, when the views are clearest before mist builds over the valley.
