Overview

Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the "Bridge in the Sky", is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks located between Ella and Demodara railway stations. Built in 1921 during the British colonial period, the bridge stands approximately 30 metres high and stretches across a lush green valley.

The bridge is constructed entirely from stone, brick, and cement, without the use of steel — a remarkable engineering achievement of its time. According to local accounts, the original steel intended for construction was diverted for use during World War I, leading local builders to complete the structure using traditional materials.

Surrounded by dense jungle and tea plantations, the bridge offers a dramatic setting, especially when trains pass across the arches. The name "Nine Arch Bridge" comes from its nine elegant arches, while the Sinhala name "Ahas Namaye Palama" refers to the view of "nine skies" visible when standing beneath the bridge.

Today, it is one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Sri Lanka, particularly popular during train crossing times.
