About this Route

The Nonpareil Estate Road is one of the most scenic highland routes in Sri Lanka, climbing from Belihuloya into the remote Nonpareil Estate toward the boundary of Horton Plains National Park. The route ascends rapidly through tea estates and forested slopes, gaining over 900 metres in elevation within a relatively short distance. The road is narrow, rugged, and filled with sharp bends, making it both a challenging and rewarding journey. One of the main highlights along the route is Baker’s Bend — a dramatic horseshoe-shaped viewpoint located at approximately 1,530 metres above sea level. From here, panoramic views stretch across the Sabaragamuwa highlands, with distant mountain ranges and reservoirs visible on clear days. Along the way, travellers can also observe several waterfalls formed by streams flowing through the estate, including the prominent Nonpareil Estate Falls. These cascades appear in multiple segments as the road winds upward. The route can be explored by motorbike, 4WD vehicle, or on foot. Hiking the road offers a gradual but steady climb with constant viewpoints, while driving requires careful handling due to steep gradients and uneven surfaces. Although the estate road continues toward the Horton Plains boundary, access beyond this point is restricted as it enters protected national park land. The Nonpareil Estate Road is best experienced as a slow scenic journey, combining mountain driving, viewpoints, and hidden natural attractions in one route.
