Ambuluwawa Tower

Ambuluwawa Tower stands on the summit of Ambuluwawa Mountain in Gampola, Kandy District, at an elevation of approximately 1,000 metres above sea level. The tower is the centrepiece of the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex, a unique site managed by the Forest Department that combines nature conservation with multi-religious heritage.

The tower itself is an architectural rarity — its design incorporates elements from Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, representing Sri Lanka's multi-faith identity within a single structure. The cylindrical base rises to a bulbous middle section before tapering into a pointed stupa-like spire, giving it a silhouette unlike any other structure in Sri Lanka.

Visitors can climb the tower via a steep external spiral staircase. The ascent is narrow and requires some confidence with heights, but the reward is a full 360-degree view from the observation platform. Below, the town of Gampola and its surrounding residential areas spread across the valley floor, with forested ridges rising on all sides and distant mountain ranges visible on clear days.

The broader Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex includes walking trails through cloud forest, a small lake, multiple religious shrines, and viewpoints across the hillside. The biodiversity of the area — endemic birds, butterflies, and montane flora — makes it a worthwhile site beyond the tower itself.

Ambuluwawa is an easy day trip from Kandy, located just 15 km south near Gampola, and is often combined with a visit to the town or onward travel toward Nuwara Eliya.
