Overview

Kalabokka 360 Upper Division Viewpoint is one of the more remote and rewarding viewpoints in the Knuckles Conservation Forest of the Matale District. The summit sits at the edge of a dramatic cliff, dropping steeply into a valley of paddy fields, village settlements, and winding rural roads far below.

The "360" in the name reflects the all-round panoramic quality of the view, with mountain ridges visible in every direction on clear mornings. When mist rolls across the highlands — as it frequently does — the experience shifts to something more atmospheric, with the valley disappearing and reappearing through cloud cover.

A ticket counter operates at the start of the route, and the trail then climbs through a mix of scrub and highland grassland before reaching the summit platform. The top has basic facilities including a small thatched shelter, wooden safety railings, and a designated camping area. Overnight stays are possible for those wanting to catch sunrise from the summit.

The Knuckles Conservation Forest, which surrounds the viewpoint, is a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve supporting a remarkable range of endemic flora and fauna, including purple-faced langurs, endemic birds, and montane cloud forest vegetation.

Kalabokka is less visited than Riverston or Pitawala Pathana nearby, making it a good choice for travellers looking for a quieter highland experience. The combination of viewpoint, trek, and camping option makes it popular with local adventure groups.
