Overview
Huluganga Waterfall, also known as Huluganga Ella, is a 75-metre-high waterfall located near Panwila in the Kandy District. The waterfall is formed by a stream originating from the Knuckles mountain range, one of Sri Lanka’s most biodiverse and scenic regions.
The cascading water passes through the villages of Elliyadda and Aratthana before eventually flowing into the Victoria Reservoir. The waterfall is regarded as part of the cultural and natural heritage of the Dumbara (Knuckles) region and attracts both local and foreign visitors.
A dam was constructed across the upper section of the waterfall under the Kundasale Water Supply Scheme. Environmental groups have noted that the reduced space between the dam and the fall may impact the natural water flow, especially during dry seasons.
Huluganga Waterfall gained national recognition as a primary filming location for the popular Sri Lankan teledrama “Ella Langa Walauwa” (Mansion by the Fall).
One of the most convenient features of this waterfall is its easy access. A viewpoint is located close to the roadside. Near the bridge over the Huluganga River — close to a Bank of Ceylon branch — a steel staircase leads down to the waterfall. A small ticket counter is available at the entrance.
