Overview

Riverston Top is one of the finest viewpoints in Sri Lanka's Knuckles Conservation Forest, located in the Matale District of the Central Province. Perched at an elevation of approximately 1,415 metres above sea level, the viewpoint commands a sweeping panoramic vista across the Knuckles mountain range, the Dumbara Valley, and distant reservoirs visible on clear days.

The approach road climbs steadily through montane forest and open highland grassland, offering views throughout the ascent. Visitors register and pay at a ticket counter near the base, then follow a short paved road along an exposed ridge to the summit area.

The summit of Riverston is characterised by open grassland, rocky terrain, and communication towers that mark the highest accessible point. The 360-degree view from the top takes in multiple peaks of the Knuckles range, deep forested valleys, and on exceptionally clear mornings, plains stretching toward the coast.

The Knuckles Conservation Forest surrounding Riverston is a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve and one of the most biodiverse mountain ecosystems in Sri Lanka, home to cloud forest, montane grassland, and a wide range of endemic flora and fauna.

A visit to Riverston is typically combined with nearby attractions including the Pitawala Pathana grassland, Mini World's End viewpoint, and the Bambarella village area. The upper road sections benefit from a 4WD or sturdy vehicle.
