Sera Ella Waterfall is a beautiful 10-metre-high waterfall located in the Dumbara Jungle near Illukkumbura in the Matale District. The waterfall is split into two parallel cascades, each approximately 10 metres high, creating a scenic and symmetrical flow.
The waterfall is formed where the Kitul Canal (originating from Kaudagammana Mountain) and the Hunumadala River (flowing from Gonamada and Deyuthu Gammmaduwa mountains) merge to form the Puwakpitiya River. This later joins the Thelgamu River. The fall is created as the water tumbles over a protruding rock face in the forested Dumbara region.
One of the most unique features of Sera Ella is the cave located behind the waterfall. Steps have been constructed to allow visitors to safely walk behind the cascading water, even when the flow is strong. This makes it one of the few waterfalls in Sri Lanka where you can safely experience a behind-the-waterfall view.
The waterfall flows throughout the year and is at its fullest between November and March during the monsoon season. The name "Sera Ella" is derived from the "Sera" species of fish found in the surrounding waters.
Because of its easy access and unique cave feature, Sera Ella is a popular stop for travelers exploring the Knuckles (Dumbara) region.
