Overview

Bambarakanda Waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka, standing at an impressive height of 241 metres (791 ft). Located in the Badulla District within Sri Lanka’s central highlands, it is one of the country’s most iconic natural attractions and ranks among the tallest waterfalls in the world.

Unlike wide curtain-style waterfalls, Bambarakanda descends as a thin, elegant white ribbon from a rocky escarpment. The waterfall is formed by the Kuda Oya, a tributary of the Walawe River, flowing down from the Uduweriya Haputale mountain range.

Bambarakanda is a popular destination for photography and sightseeing. During the monsoon season from May to September, the water flow is at its peak and the surrounding highland landscape turns vibrant green, making it the most dramatic time to visit.

The base of the waterfall lies a few hundred metres from the access road. While there is no clearly marked path all the way to the base, visitors can walk down through the forested area carefully to reach closer views of the falls.
