Overview

Bolthumbe Ella, locally known as Aliya Wetuna Ella, is a small 8-metre-high waterfall located near Bolthumbe in the Balangoda area of Ratnapura District. The waterfall lies along Bothumba Oya, close to the well-known Bolthumbe Saman Devalaya.

The name "Aliya Wetuna Ella" translates to "the waterfall where an elephant fell," referring to a local legend associated with the site. Although modest in height, the waterfall is set within a dense forest environment, offering a quiet and secluded natural experience.

To reach the waterfall, visitors must follow the road toward Bolthumbe Saman Devalaya. A short distance along this road leads to a stream crossing known locally as "Sapaththu Palama." From here, a short walk along the stream and through the forest leads to the waterfall.

Due to its hidden location and minimal accessibility, Bolthumbe Ella is best suited for travellers looking for lesser-known waterfalls away from crowded tourist routes.
