Day 1 - Bambarakanda, Lanka Ella and Yahalathenna

Visit Bambarakanda first, continue along the shared forest trail, take the branch to Lanka Ella, and then use the separate jungle branch for Yahalathenna before returning to the Bambarakanda entrance.

Getting around

Ordinary vehicles can currently reach the entrance, but confirm road conditions after heavy rain. Continue on foot with a knowledgeable local guide for the forest sections.

Practical route notes

  • One entrance ticket covers access to the three-waterfall route; confirm the current price at the entrance.
  • Arrange a guide before starting: a guide is strongly recommended for Lanka Ella and required for the difficult-to-find Yahalathenna jungle branch.
  • All three waterfalls can be covered in one day when you start in the morning, but treat this as a full hiking day rather than three short stops.
  • Choose a dry-weather day and ask the guide about recent rain, trail conditions, water levels, and any local warnings.
  • Avoid the route during heavy rain, immediately after prolonged rain, or when severe-weather or landslide warnings are active.
  • Wear hiking footwear and carry sufficient water and food; expect mud, leeches, and weak mobile coverage in forest sections.
  • Do not depend exclusively on phone navigation or attempt the Yahalathenna branch without a knowledgeable local guide.
  • Do not enter the water based only on appearance. Ask the guide or site staff about current depth, flow, and weather conditions; this itinerary does not recommend bathing or swimming.
