Overview
Lipton’s Seat is a world-famous viewpoint located in Haputale, perched at an elevation of around 1,950 meters on Poonagala Mountain. It is widely considered one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in Sri Lanka, offering a stunning 360-degree view across the island.
The viewpoint sits within the historic Dambethenne Tea Estate, surrounded by endless stretches of neatly arranged tea plantations and rolling mountain ridges. The scenery here reflects the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, with layers of hills fading into the distance.
Lipton’s Seat is closely linked to Sir Thomas Lipton, the pioneer of Ceylon Tea, who used this very spot to observe his vast tea estate. The viewpoint still carries his name, preserving its historical significance and colonial heritage.
On clear mornings, visitors can witness extraordinary long-distance views that stretch across multiple regions of the country. However, the area is often covered by mist later in the day, which makes early morning visits essential for the best experience.
The journey to Lipton’s Seat is as memorable as the destination itself, with scenic roads winding through tea estates and local villages. Visitors can either hike through the plantations or travel by tuk-tuk or jeep along the narrow estate road.
