Overview

Olu Ella Waterfall is one of the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, standing at approximately 127 metres (417 ft) high and about 18 metres wide. Located in Berannawa in the Kegalle District, this impressive cascade is easily accessible as it lies directly beside the roadside.

The waterfall originates from Wee Oya, which begins at the 1,200-metre-high Baranawa Mountain. The stream later merges with Welihel Oya near Parusella before flowing into the Kelani River at Yatiyanthota. Olu Ella is considered the 6th tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka and the tallest waterfall linked to the Kelani Ganga basin.

The waterfall descends in four distinct segments, creating a dramatic layered appearance. Including the section below the bridge, the total vertical drop is estimated to reach nearly 200 metres.

One of the most unique features of Olu Ella is the historic wooden bridge that crosses Wee Oya. Built during the colonial period for transporting tea leaves, it is believed to be the oldest wooden bridge still in use in Sri Lanka. This bridge adds historical charm to the natural beauty of the site.

Despite being accessible by vehicle, Olu Ella remains relatively quiet compared to more commercial waterfalls, preserving its natural environment and scenic tranquility.
