Overview
Asupini Ella Waterfall is a 30-metre-high waterfall located near Aranayaka in the Kandy District. The waterfall forms part of the Maha River, which originates from both sides of the Raksawa mountain range at an elevation of approximately 570 metres above sea level.
The waterfall creates a deep plunge pool surrounded by large rocks. Bathing is not encouraged due to the risk of drowning. At the base of the pool lie crevasses known locally as Pinikandawela and Tissakumarawela, which villagers believe hide ancient treasures.
Asupini Ella is rich in history and folklore. Ancient boundary records indicate that the waterfall once served as a demarcation between the regions of Satara Korale and Paranu Kuru Korale. According to legend, the waterfall derives its name from a dramatic incident in which a mounted monarch leapt from its upper section. Villagers also speak of mysterious roaring sounds from the waterfall, believed in folklore to foretell future events.
The upper section of the waterfall flows through Uda Palatha, near Apalawatte Pallegama village, while the lower section can be accessed via Horawela in the Kegalle District.
Due to its historical background, mountain surroundings, and strong seasonal water flow, Asupini Ella is considered one of the culturally significant waterfalls in the region.
